Sorenson’s Ranch

Sorenson’s Ranch School serves male and female students from ages 13 to 18 who have histories of problems with parents, substance abuse, low or nonexistent self-esteem, learning difficulties, running away, dropping out or being expelled from school, and extreme mental stress.

Program Type

Sorenson’s Ranch is a co-educational boarding school, residential school, and treatment center for troubled youths with average and above average ability.

Program Description

Sorenson’s Ranch provides a comprehensive program incorporating academics, therapy, community service, ranch work, and other activities. All of these activities help students to find themselves, develop civility, correct academic deficiencies, get well, and experience success. Sorenson’s Ranch provides a natural setting in which students can heal from the negative impacts of a big city environment. Sorenson’s believes that learning takes place not only in a formal classroom, but in all activities a young person participates in. We believe, in fact, that some youngsters – especially dropouts – learn far more outside the classroom.

Facilities

Located on a ranch with a working farm in southern Utah at a 7,000-foot elevation, the school is situated in an open wilderness area. The surrounding valley is three miles wide and fourteen miles long; fine small canyon streams teem with beaver ponds and trout. Neighboring mountains are snow-covered year-round. Student housing consists of ten rustic cabins and dorms all with attached restrooms. There is a counseling office, a kitchen, an infirmary, a game room, hiking trails, playing fields, animal/tack facilities. The lodge houses a multipurpose room for dining and other activities.

School Credentials

Sorenson’s is a licensed residential treatment facility that includes drug and alcohol treatment. We are a facility accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, fully licensed as a mental health and substance-abuse treatment center with the Utah State Human Services Department, and accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Academics

Sorenson’s program includes year-round academics. The competency-based curriculum provides all the courses necessary for the student to earn a Utah State high school diploma. Classes are based on a mastery of skills rather than on time spent sitting in a classroom. Sorenson’s school does not feature a quarter or semester system.

Follow-up Program

Depending on the individual, transition from the Sorenson program may be to a home, another school, or a college.

Tuition

Tuition at Sorenson’s Ranch is $5,500.00 per month, with a one time startup up fee of $2500. Sorenson’s operates entirely on tuition; there are no scholarships available.
